1st ANDALUSIAN AUDIOVISUAL FORUM A major feature of the current international audiovisual scene is that animation productions are generating not only greater financial profits but also a considerably larger number of jobs.

It is well known that the guaranteed return on an animation product is directly related to the size of the market at which it is aimed. Consequently, in an increasingly international and globalised market, animation products must from the outset be designed to meet the demands of the largest possible market. In Spain, because the country is divided into autonomous administrative regions, and because the audiovisual industry in each of these regions is differently organised, there is a tendency to create animation products aimed at a local market, which are less internationally competitive and therefore more difficult to market and promote.

This is generally the case for the animation industry all over Spain, although a number of Regions have made determined efforts to improve the development and consolidation of this innovative and forward-looking sector. In this respect, particular mention should be made of the work done over the last few years in Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque Country, which have been the major driving force behind Spain’s animation industry.

Apart from this regional boost to the industry, the regional public television channels have done a great deal to stimulate the development of the audiovisual industry at regional level.

Another key issue is the joint-funding and coproduction of animation projects, which provides greater guarantees of feasibility in terms not only of production but also of subsequent marketing and distribution.

Compared to that of other regions, the Andalusian animation industry is a relative newcomer. Its development depends on a medium-term and long-term commitment on the part of all bodies involved in the audiovisual sector, and on their willingness to create the mechanisms required to facilitate access to joint-funding and coproduction in order to ensure the viability of regionally-produced animations.

Since coproduction is a key element in the development and consolidation of the animation industry, it would be useful to examine the real possibility of joint production by regional authorities and regional television channels, in order to enhance the competitiveness of the product on the international market.
