Fréderick Back was born in 1924. After having lived in Strasburg and Paris, he studied fine arts in Rennes. He has lived in Montréal (Canada) since 1948, where he has worked as a professor of Applied and Fine Arts. He also works as an illustrator, model maker, and decorator and collaborates regularly on the educational, scientific, and musical broadcasts for the Société Radio-Canada. Ever since 1968 he has worked in animated film by making short films for all audiences though with special attention to children. His work is a tribute to nature, animals, and the possibility of living in harmony with it, without destroying it, but rather, by loving it and respecting it.
His sensitivity, the elegance and subtlety of his drawings, and his extraordinary mastery of color have been the trademark of his creation, along with his unique and patient work, inspired by a profound respect for life.
With two Oscars and innumerable awards attributed to his work, Frédéric Back is undoubtedly the most recognized and award winning Canadian animation film maker, and he is recognized as one of the great masters in animated film.
